Walking in the Luxembourg Ardennes 2008

This tour is not described in our brochure
Map of Luxembourg Ardennes This unique walking tour is the perfect introduction to walking in the Luxembourg Ardennes. Sandwiched between the Belgian Ardennes and the German Eifel, it has characteristics of both, while having preserved its own cultural mix of the Germanic and the Francophone.

This is a six day / seven night circular walking tour in the north of the country, starting and ending in Clervaux. The holiday is available on a half board (dinner, bed & breakfast) basis.
Day 1. Arrive in Clervaux.

Day 2. Follow the Sentier du Nord (Northern Luxembourg Long Distance Path) through the idyllic valley of the River Woltz to Maulesmillen. Here leave the valley and follow a stream northeast before turning east to Heinerscheid (about 9 miles).

Day 3. Walk west back to the valley of the River Woltz. Continue to the west through forest, climbing over the hills separating the River Woltz from the River Tretterbaach. Follow this valley to your hotel, the Mill at Asselborn (about 9 miles).

Day 4. Today's walk takes you across open country through an number of typical Ardennes villages. Then you walk through classic Ardennes forest, mixed deciduous and evergreens until you reach the valley of the Kirelbaach stream, which you follow to Derenbach (about 12 miles).

Day 5. Much of today's route follows the Sentier Rhin-Meuse (Long Distance Path from the River Meuse in France to the Rhine in Germany). First you walk across open country to the valley of the River Wiltz. From here you have a choice of a level walk along the valley or a more demanding route climbing through the forested hills to the north of the river. Both routes join aagan at Winseler, from where you follow the valley to the capital of the Luxembourg Ardennes, Wiltz (about 10 to 12 miles).

Day 6. Walk over forested hills to the valley of the Himmelbaach. continue to Merkholtz, then over more wooded hills to (about 9 miles).
From here you can take the train to Goebelsmühle and continue the walk from there.
Alternatively, follow the Sentier du Nord through the wooded hills above the river to Goebelsmühle (about 5 miles from Kautenbach to Goebelsmühle).
From Goebelsmühle the walk continues along the Sentier de la Haute Sûre (Upper Sure Valley Path) at first along the river, then across the wooded slopes above the river. For the final stretch there is again a choice; either follow the river, or climb up to the ruins of Bourscheid Castle en route to your hotel across the river from Bourscheid (about 6 miles from Goebelsmühle to the hotel).

Day 7. The final day's walk takes you back to Goebelsmühle. If you took the riverside route the previous day, walk via the castle today. You then take the Sentier de la Wiltz (Wiltz Valley Path) first along the south bank of the river, then across the wooded slopes above the river, back to Kautenbach (about 12 miles).
From here you can walk all the way back to Clervaux along the Sentier du Nord; the distance is about 11 miles, or you can take the train all the way.
