Walking in Alsace

Alsace, on the west bank of the Rhine and across from the Black Forest, has during its past been both German and French. This mixed heritage is abundantly clear today in an area with its own unique atmosphere. The eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains shelter entrancing villages with half-timbered houses covered with flowers. The surrounding country blends refreshing forests with vineyards whose wines typify the blend of French and German culture.

We currently offer two walking tours, a seven night, six day holiday in northern Alsace and a six night, five day holiday in central Alsace.

The Medieval Alsace Tour
This holiday allows you to discover many of the castles of northern Alsace while walking the the UNESCO recognised Biosphere Reserve of the Northern Vosges Nature Park. This heavily wooded countryside is home to numerous castles, many ruined, some restored, as well as old churches and abbeys.

Traces of more recent history is eveidenced by the remains of the Maginot Line of the 1930, while in the villages you will still find old crafts of stone carving and crystal manufacture alive and well.

This is the less demanding of the holidays we offer in Alsace. While the maximum amount of climbing in one day is around 2500 feet, on most days there is much less than that. We therefore regard this tour as more suitable for the less experienced walker. Most people will not require much more than around 5 hours walking per day.
This is a seven night holiday, but you can add additional nights, in order to break up the walk, or to explore the start and finish points more thoroughly.

Vineyards and Hills of Alsace
This holiday offers two highly contrasting landscapes. First you explore some of the most famous vineyards in France, producers of highly characteristic wines. Then you climb into the hills of the Vosges, where the summits rise to over 3000 feet, before returning to the lush valley below.

Hills and forests are laced with small valleys watered by attractive streams, while the villages are known throughout France for their colourful floral displays. The vineyards too give the opportunity for gentle strolls to the winemakers, where you can enjoy the local wines in the most attractive surrounding.

This is a more demanding holiday, with significant amounts of climbing on most days, usually 2500 feet per day, sometimes more. We therefore recommend this tour for more experienced walkers.
This is a six night holiday, but you can add additional nights, either in the Vosges, or in the vineyards, to give you the opportunity for a more thorough exploration of the area.
